LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION
Introduction
Since its launch in March 2000, the nonpartisan Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free Initiative has been a change agent to improve children’s health on a national scale. With the formation of the Emeritus Group in January 2003, spouses of Governors who completed their terms in their State houses were able to continue their work to prevent childhood drinking as members of Leadership. As a result, Leadership has become a means through which spouses of both current and former Governors can use their collective reach and access to engage policy makers, build public awareness, and identify and support comprehensive solutions to address this serious children’s health problem.
Recognizing the need for long-term sustainability, Leadership’s Emeritus Group established a nonprofit 501(c) 3 philanthropy, the Leadership To Keep Children Alcohol Free Foundation, in October 2004. Through the Foundation, spouses of former and sitting Governors will continue to work together beyond the duration of the federally funded Leadership Initiative contract.
Mission
The Leadership To Keep Children Alcohol Free Foundation, a public not-for-profit foundation of former and sitting Governors' spouses and their representatives, is a national philanthropy dedicated to promoting the health, well-being and potential of our Nation's youth by preventing alcohol use among children. The Foundation recognizes childhood drinking as a public health issue and seeks to make its prevention a national health priority. The Foundation works with Federal, State and local policy makers and opinion leaders to develop and implement comprehensive, integrated evidence-based approaches to help keep children alcohol free.
Goals
1) The Foundation raises awareness by educating policy makers, opinion leaders, the media and the public about the need to prevent and stop alcohol use among children.
2) The Foundation identifies, convenes and fosters leadership at the local, State and national levels to develop and implement strategies to prevent and stop alcohol use among children.
3) The Foundation assists States with capacity building linked to the programmatic focus of the Foundation.
4) The Foundation promotes basic and policy relevant research related to childhood alcohol use.
