Introducing Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr.
Lieutenant Governor James “Duke” Aiona, Jr., a former Family and District Court Judge, joined Leadership in early 2003 and accepted the position of Co-Chair in 2007. He brings his long history of community service and experience working with families and juvenile defendants to the initiative. His accomplishments include serving as the first judge of the Hawaii Drug Court.
As Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Aiona works with Governor Lingle in pursuing legislation for a comprehensive anti-drug initiative in Hawaii, including substance abuse treatment and prevention programs, and in launching a Drug Control Plan to coordinate Hawaii’s fight against alcohol and drugs. In 2007, he announced a coordinated State effort to increase enforcement of Hawaii's laws prohibiting underage drinking. In May 2007, the Lieutenant Governor hosted a visit by Acting Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu to promote his Call to Action To Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking.
Mr. Aiona is also active on the national level, serving on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Advisory Council.
Mr. Aiona is also concerned with the education and health welfare of Hawaii’s children. In 2007, he attended a mock-car demonstration to demonstrate the dangers of drinking and driving to high-school students. He also has spoken to students and faculties at schools throughout the State.
The Lt. Governor also actively supported SAMHSA’s annual Reach Out Now Teach-Ins, by leading Teach-Ins at numerous schools statewide and encouraging community participation. In 2006, Mr. Aiona worked with communities that conducted Underage Drinking Prevention Town Hall Meetings, inviting all participants to a follow-up “Training/Lessons Learned” session to share information gleaned from the statewide meetings.
The Lt. Governor is a native of Hawaii. He received the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii. He and his wife have four children.
