 Pennsylvanian, Judge Rendell

PENNSYLVANIA'S FIRST LADY
JUDGE MARJORIE O. RENDELL

"The latest research tells us that students who abuse alcohol may remember 10 percent less of what they have learned than students who don't drink. Alcohol alters and kills brain cells and can adversely affect the ability of young people to perform well both at school and at extracurricular activities."
— Judge Marjorie Rendell

Introducing Marjorie Osterlund Rendell, First Lady of Pennsylvania

Marjorie "Midge" Osterlund Rendell became the 43rd First Lady of Pennsylvania when her husband, Governor Edward G. Rendell, was sworn in as Governor of Pennsylvania on January 21.

The First Lady graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, and achieved a Juris Doctor degree from the Villanova University School of Law. Her experience includes serving as a mediator for the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In 1994, the First Lady was inducted to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; and in 1997, Judge Rendell was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Judge Rendell brings her concern for, and involvement with, community issues to the Leadership. She has been an active board member of the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Philadelphia for more than 20 years. Currently, she is a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, Chair of the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing, and a board member of Penn Medicine. Additionally, she serves on the Trustees Council of Penn Women and the university's External Affairs and Neighborhood Initiatives Committees. She also avidly participates in several cultural and performing arts programs, and is the Vice Chair of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

The Governor and First Lady have one son.
