Dear Dr. Hull:

I just visited the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free Web site (http://www.alcoholfreechildren.org).  As you may know, Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a unique coalition of Governors’ spouses, Federal agencies, and public and private organizations, is an initiative to prevent the use of alcohol by children ages 9 to 15.  It is the only national effort that focuses on this age group.

Research shows that young people are drinking more at earlier ages and that alcohol can have serious, often lifelong consequences for their health and well-being.  More than 40 percent of individuals who start drinking before the age of 13 will develop alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency at some point in their lives.  The Leadership initiative is alerting the Nation to this critical public health problem and mobilizing action to prevent it.

As a parent, citizen, and member of (list civic and community organizations, school-related groups; include title if appropriate, e.g., Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce) I am writing to express my concern about the very serious issue of underage drinking.  I urge you to join the Leadership campaign and the more than 30 Governors’ spouses across the nation in this worthwhile endeavor.

If you would like more information on the initiative, please contact Roberta Hochberg, Project Director, at 301-654-6740 or at leadership@alcoholfreechildren.org.  Thank you for your efforts to keep the children of Arizona healthy and alcohol free.

Sincerely,
