HAWAII'S FIRST LADY VICKY CAYETANO |
“Parents tend to think drinking and driving is bad. But they don’t see anything wrong with drinking. This just shows how little parents are aware of that overlooked age group between 9 and 15.” Vicky Cayetano
Introducing Vicky Cayetano, First Lady of Hawaii
Ms. Cayetano is a Co-chair of the Leadership Committee.* At the national level, her media activities have included joining other First Ladies in signing a letter published in USA Today under the heading, Our Children’s No. 1 Enemy: Alcohol. In the Fall of 2000, Ms. Cayetano also was the keynote speaker at the Hawaii Town Hall Meeting for Youth (a Mothers Against Drunk Driving [MADD] youth summit meeting), and at the Junior ROTC Spring Camp. At both these meetings, Ms. Cayetano spoke directly to hundreds of youth about the lifelong consequences of underage drinking. In the business and civic sectors, she addressed the members of the State Liquor Commission at their annual conference. Ms. Cayetano has also made two public service announcements on the prevention of early alcohol use. As First Lady of Hawaii, Ms. Cayetano is involved with numerous health and welfare organizations.
A native of the Philippines, Ms. Cayetano was raised in San Francisco. She attended Stanford University and moved to Hawaii in 1983. Since 1990, Ms. Cayetano has served as chief executive officer of United Laundry Services, a company she founded in 1988. Today, the business employs nearly 300 people. Ms. Cayetano has a son and a daughter.
* The 13-member Leadership Committee reflects the geographic and political diversity of our Nation and represents the wide, national appeal of the initiativeŻ to keep children alcohol free. The Leadership Committee plays a continuing critical role in awareness raising at the State and national levels.
