Michigan, Daniel G. Mulhern

MICHIGAN'S  FIRST GENTLEMAN
DANIEL G. MULHERN

"Too many of our children lose themselves in alcohol and drugs. As caring adults we can't afford to lose them. Instead, we must provide them with the activities and care through which they can find their goodness and find hope for their future." —Daniel Mulhern

Introducing Daniel G. Mulhern, First Gentleman of Michigan

First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern brings his vast experience with leadership education and the development of community youth efforts to the Leadership initiative.

In 1999, Mr. Mulhern co-founded the Mulhern Hastings Group, a leadership and organizational development firm. He presently contributes to Governor Granholm's Administration by continuing to teach leadership and by taking on challenging projects, such as Mentor Michigan. Started by Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, First Lady Michelle Engler, and former Detroit Piston Isiah Thomas in 2000, Mentor Michigan successfully recruited 4,000 care adults to mentor children who had a light brush with the legal system. Mr. Mulhern is committed to increasing the volunteer ranks to 10,000 in the next four years to help more Michigan children succeed.

Prior to his work in individual and organizational development, Mr. Mulhern practiced law, worked for Congressman Sander Levin, and directed the youth services division for Wayne County. He has taught leadership at Tufts University, Wayne State, and the University of Michigan at Dearborn. In 1993, Mr. Mulhern was awarded a WK Kellogg National Leadership grant that allowed him to further his study of leadership with nationally renowned scholars.

The First Gentleman also has a book on character and leadership in the works for which he has interviewed more than 60 local, national, and international political leaders.

Mr. Mulhern and his wife Jennifer M. Granholm (Michigan’s 47th Governor) have three children.
