Kansas First Gentleman K. Gary Sebelius is a Federal magistrate judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. He joined Leadership in 2003. Judge Sebelius specializes in employment law, civil rights, and civil litigation and is a noted lecturer and the author of numerous articles addressing civil rights and employment law. Judge Sebelius is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Who's Who in American Law.
His 2007 activities on behalf of underage drinking prevention include participating in several public service announcements for the media campaign “Not in Our House,” which was developed to educate the community about the issue of social hosting. The PSAs include a radio spot with Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Leadership awarded a State stipend to this campaign through the Kansas Family Partnership.
In 2005, Judge Sebelius recorded a public service announcement about underage drinking in Kansas as part of an ongoing campaign to promote healthy families. His message was that as a parent he knows that talking to children about the dangers of underage drinking can be difficult, but as a judge he has seen the consequences.
Judge Sebelius also regularly visits elementary school classrooms to encourage young people to read and is active with numerous community organizations, including Florence Crittenton Services for at-risk adolescent girls.
Born in Norton, Kansas, Judge Sebelius earned a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University, graduating magna cum laude, and a juris doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. The Sebeliuses have two sons.
